Virginia and Tennessee State Police team up for Thanksgiving traffic safety

State troopers in Virginia and Tennessee were busy the night before Thanksgiving. Virginia State Police troopers and members of the the Tennessee Highway Patrol teamed up to help with patrols and make the start of the holiday safer for drivers traveling the Interstate 81 corridor. It was part of "Drive to Save Lives" campaign, in conjunction with the Operation Combined Accident Reduction Effort (C.A.R.E.)

The patrols on the Virginia side focused on the I-81 corridor in the City of Bristol and Washington County. The combined efforts of both agencies resulted in a total of 118 traffic summonses and arrests:

  • 67 citations for speeding
  • 5 citations for commercial vehicle speeding
  • 12 citations for reckless driving
  • 6 citations for failing to wear a seat belt
  • 1 citation for failing to use a child safety seat

The "Drive to Save Lives" initiative is also a nationwide effort aimed at reducing traffic deaths in each state by 15 percent in 2015. Operation CARE is a state-sponsored, national program aimed at reducing traffic crashes and fatalities caused by speeding, impaired driving and failure to use to occupant restraints.
