Governor's mansion getting Christmas tree from Floyd County

FLOYD CO. (WSLS 10) -- A Christmas tree grown on a Floyd County farm is on its way to Richmond to the Governor's Mansion.

Workers at Rifton Farm and Nursery cut down the tree Friday morning and loaded it onto a truck to prepare it for its trip to Richmond.

"We appreciate the recognition and I'm glad because I have great help. Their hard work has been rewarded," said owner Robert O'Keeffe.

O'Keeffe's farm was chosen because his tree placed first at the annual Virginia Christmas Tree Growers Association meeting.

"It jumped out at us. It just seemed to be perfect. Had the perfect shape, perfect color. It just spoke to us."

The tree will arrive in Richmond on Monday.

This is the first time a tree from Rifton Farm and Nursery has been picked as the mansion's Christmas tree, but O'Keeffe said at least two other trees from Floyd County have had the distinction as well.
