Experts offer tips to winterize your car for the cold months

BLACKSBURG (WSLS 10) - With Winter right around the corer, it's time to do a routine check on your vehicle to make sure it runs smoothly especially when it gets below freezing.

Southwest Virginia is no stranger to snow, icy roads can cause dangerous accidents in the winter.

Mechanics in the New River Valley like at Auto Master Tire and Service said there is a checklist, from checking the tire pressure and and car battery.

Rob Fain with Auto Master Tire and Service, says it's always best to check your car battery during the fall, and replace if necessary because that's when they're on sale.

Make sure the the right of amount of antifreeze is in the vehicle which protects the engine from freezing and cuts back on corrosion.

If your vehicle has more than 30,000 miles, make sure to check your car's belts and hoses.

Fain says the most important thing to do is look at the coolant.

"Make sure your coolant has a low freezing point to withstand the cold weather, typically you over do it at minus 40 degrees," Rob Fain, a mechanic with Auto Master Tire service said.

AAA say as a back up you should always have an emergency kit with engine oil and wiper fluid, as well flash lights and flares.
