Traffic begins to clear after accident on I-581N north of Orange Ave.

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - Two chain-reaction accidents on Interstate 581 north, just north of the Orange Ave exit was blocking traffic Wednesday. State police said one person was transported to the hospital, but was not seriously injured.

State police said the first accident was a 'fender-bender' caused by suddenly stopping traffic. The second happened when traffic stopped suddenly for the first.

In the second, a car became wedged underneath another after rear-ending it. One person involved in that accident was taken to the hospital.

Multiple WSLS 10 employees witnessed the aftermath of the accident. One of those employees said a vehicle was partially perched on top of another. WSLS 10's Rachel Lucas snapped a photo of traffic on 581 north, which backed up quickly.

WSLS 10's Dawn Jefferies saw officers blocking traffic from entering 581 ramps from Orange Avenue, which was also becoming congested.

VDOT's 511Virginia.org website posted the following regarding the incident:

I-581N at MM 1.7

On I-581 at mile marker 1.7 in the County of Roanoke, motorists can expect major delays due to a multi-vehicle accident. The north center lane, right lane, and entrance ramp are closed. Traffic backups are approximately 3.0 miles.
