Co-creator of Mill Mountain Star dies at 98

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - Co-creator of the Mill Mountain Star, Roy C. Kinsey, Jr., has died at the age of 98 according to Oakey's Funeral Home.

According to the City of Roanoke, the Mill Mountain Star was built in 1949 by the Kinsey Sign Company, which was owned by Roy Kinsey, Jr.'s father and where Kinsey worked with his two brothers.

The Mill Mountain Star was first lit on the eve of Thanksgiving in 1949 and was intended to be a seasonal Christmas decoration.
