ROANOKE (WSLS 10 SPORTS) The Star City's new professional hockey team is officially named "The Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs." Roanoke's return to pro hockey after a decade in the deep freeze was greeted at the Berglund center by hundreds of excited fans. The team will begin play in the Southern Professional Hockey League beginning next fall. The public unveiling of the new logo and name, and jersey was met with enthusiasm. Signups for season tickets got underway tonight with a modest goal of slightly more than 600 dedicated fans. That's what the new ownership is looking for in year one. They also understood the cry for affordable family entertainment and delivered plenty of affordable family options for tickets. New president Bob McGinn--was thrilled with turnout for the team name and logo announcement, and the future of hockey in the Star city now appears to be bright.
"It does-- I think Knoxville and Fayetteville-- I think there are going to be our our rivals. They are 4 1/2 hours away. I think we can get there, our fans can get there, and they can come here. Every game is going to be live streamed whether we're home or away so all the fans are going to be able to see our games whether we are here at the Berglund Center or away so I think things are just falling into place-great, explains owner President McGinn.
