Division I soccer championship brings million dollar boost to Martinsville


MARTINSVILLE (WSLS 10) – The National Junior College Athletic Association is holding it’s National Division I Men’s Soccer Championship in Virginia for the first time!

Through November 21st, 12 teams will be competing at the Smith River Sports Complex in Martinsville.

The Martinsville-Henry County Visitor Center projects 1,500 people will visit the area, which in return leads to a huge economic boost.

“Each of these athletes they need a place to eat, so our restaurants are benefiting,” said Jennifer Doss, director of tourism for Martinsville-Henry County. “We’re seeing teams rolling up by the bus loads.”

More than 1,000 hotel rooms have been booked. Projections show up to a two million dollar boost in the community.
