The 63 year old said he's proud of the progress the Star City has made. During a press conference Monday, he pointed to an increase in downtown living, renovations at Elmwood Park, the Roanoke greenway and efforts to bring Amtrack back to Roanoke as accomplishments during his tenure.

"From trails to rails, Roanoke is on the right track and it has been my privilege to serve as the mayor of this great city for so many years,' he said.

With bowers stepping out of the picture for 2016's mayoral race, City Council members Dave Trinkle and Sherman Lea have said they are strongly considering running in 2016. Political analyst and professor at Hollins, Ed Lynch, said the next mayor will have to convince voters they can attract jobs.

"Economic development and jobs in the city particularly the sorts of jobs that will keep young people here," said Lynch.

Lynch said public safety and crime will also be a key issues.

"It's not a serious problem here but the next mayor will want to keep it that way," Lynch said.

Bowers said it's to soon to endorse any candidate for May's mayoral race. Looking back over his years in office, he said serving the people of Roanoke has been an honor.

"There may be higher offices but I can't image any higher honor than being the mayor of your own hometown" he said.

Bowers said he has not ruled out running for a different political office.
