ROANOKE (WSLS 10)-- Adam Sandoval is "Scootin" across America with his chihuahua, Scooter, riding shotgun to raise money for the families of fallen service members.

They're logging thousands of miles, 45,000 so far, as they stop at every Harley Davidson Dealership in 48 states.

"I said I'm gonna find a way to do something to give it back and I'm gonna find a way to have fun doing it," Sandovcal said.

He never served in the military but says he rides to serve those who did.

"I think that it's important that people recognize it's not just the soldiers, it's their families who are sacrificing every day."

Sandoval is raising money for the American Legion Legacy Scholarship fund which benefits the kids of fallen soldiers. It's helps ensure higher education is possible for them.

The ride isn't always smooth. Sandoval's bike broke down Wednesday in Lynchburg, delaying his arrival in Roanoke. It's one of many bumps along the way.

"I've ridden in sleet and snow, all kinds of stuff in the winter."

But he keeps going, persevering through inclement weather. The duo started in November 2014 with plans to wrap up in one year. They've extended the trip to two years. They plan to reach 100,000 miles.

"Yeah, yeah. I have to keep going. I can't stop," Sandoval said.

The people who stop at the dealerships to meet him or even join him in his ride help fuel his passion.

Sandoval and Scooter will break two Guinness Book World Records in the process of the cross country adventure. One for the most miles in one country on a single motorcycle trip. The current Current record, he said, is 23,700. The second record is for the world's longest charity ride.

"There so many areas of this country that are so beautiful and diverse. I wanted to experience them."

Scooter seems to love the ride as well, even tucked in the front of Sandoval's jacket on a rainy ride.

"When the weathers nice he loves nothing more than to ride on the back. On the bike I've got a little dog house and he can sit up. He's got his own windshield and he looks around and smells the air. It's pretty cool. I like to say he's the show and I'm the chauffeur. Everybody's always excited to see Scooter. He's got one job and that's to spread smiles. And he does that everywhere we go."

Adam and Scooter, taking a road less traveled to give back.

"That's the most important part of this. The fact that these kids served in their own way. I mean they're giving up a huge huge part of their life so that we can all live the way we live."
