Suspected gunman dies of self-inflicted gunshot wound in Iowa

KWQC – BETTENDORF, Iowa (KWQC) – Police are responding to calls of a possible shooter in the 4500 block of Utica Ridge in Bettendorf. It appears to have started near the Marine recruiting office located at 710 E. Kimberly Rd. in Davenport around 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 26, 2015.

Captain Jim Stenger, Marine public affairs officer with the 9thMarine Corps Recruiting District issued a statement.

"We are closely monitoring the developing situation in Davenport, Iowa. We will provide further details as they are confirmed; however, current reports are that it appears to have been a shooting in a civilian/commercial facility next to the Marine Corps recruiting office. All Marine Corps Recruiting Command personnel have been accounted for and are unharmed."

A spokeswoman for the City of Bettendorf says at 2:05 p.m. police were called to a report of an active shooter in the 4500 block of Utica Ride Rd. The suspect fired one round to the head, which was fatal.

A witness said he was in the Marine recruiting center when he heard shots fired at a nearby law office. He says he heard screaming and then heard the gunman try to reload his gun. A Marine recruiter told everyone to run. As the witness was running, he said he heard more gunfire. Kimberly Rd. was closed, but has since reopened to traffic.

Police were then called to the Miller Meier business in Bettendorf. A spokeswoman from UnityPoint Health – Trinity Bettendorf says they did go on a brief lock down, but it has been lifted.
