The caller also told police there was a male subject armed with a firearm inside the house who was refusing to exit the residence.

Dungannon Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene and began extinguishing the fire.  Scott County Sheriff's Office also responded to provide safe cover for the firefighters.

According to state police, as the firefighters battled the blaze, Gary Delp, appeared at the front door of the house and began walking away from the residence at a fast pace. Authorities said Delp was armed and began advancing towards a deputy on the scene.

Police said Delp refused to comply with the deputy's commands to drop his weapon. Delp continued toward the deputy with his firearm and was subsequently shot by the deputy.

The 63-year-old was flown to Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tenn., for treatment of serious injuries. The deputy was not hurt.

The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation's Wytheville Field Office is investigating the shooting. The investigation remains ongoing at this time. At the conclusion of the investigation, state police will turn its findings over to the Commonwealth's Attorney for review and final determination of the matter.
