ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - Students at William Byrd High school put their sports marketing skills to good use by encouraging classmates to bring in hundreds of canned food donations for the hungry in Southwest Virginia.

As part of the 1st & 10 Food Challenge, schools compete against each other to raise the most nonperishable food items in a week. William Byrd's competition was unable to participate, but that didn't stop William Byrd from lending a helping hand.

Sports marketing class members advertised the event across the school. Tuesday, those same students were able to see the fruits of their efforts.

In total, they collected 246 pounds of food!

Thanks to schools like William Byrd, the 1st & 10 food challenge has raised more than 15,000 pounds of food for the hungry.

Feeding America Southwest Virginia will distribute the food to charity food banks across Southwest Virginia.
