BOTETOURT COUNTY (WSLS 10) - On Tuesday, October 6 from 5 to 7 p.m., the Virginia Department of Transportation will host a public information meeting about the proposed centerline rumble strip project on a 4.36-mile segment of Route 220 in northern Botetourt County.
The project is a short-term safety improvement that will install centerline rumble strips from 0.09 miles north of Route 622 North (Gala Loop Road) to 0.08 miles north of Route 696 (Buhrman Road).

According to VDOT, this project is independent of the proposed reconstruction of Route 220 between Eagle Rock and Iron Gate and does not propose to modify or replace any portion of the improvements associated with that project.
A centerline rumble strip is a safety feature installed at or near the center line of a paved roadway to alert inattentive drivers (through vibration and sound) that their vehicles have left the travel lane. For head-on and opposite direction sideswipe collisions, research shows that milled center line rumble strips provide significant reductions in fatal and injury crashes.
VDOT said this public information meeting is being held to provide an opportunity for residents to learn more about the proposed project.
The meeting will be held in an ‘open-house' format with a brief presentation taking place at 5:15 and 6:15 p.m. VDOT representatives will be present to discuss the proposed project and to answer questions.
