Debris clean up underway along Roanoke River Greenway

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) -- The city of Roanoke is cleaning up the Greenway after last week's rain.

Crew with the Solid Waste Department were out Monday picking up trees, branches and other debris collecting in the Roanoke River. There was also trash washing down the river.Trucks lifted and loaded up the items to keep the river clean and to prevent bigger problems.

"We pick up old trees out of here from the root ball clear to the top of the tree,' said solid waste worker Couqueze Schrader. "Bottles, cans, just a little bit of all the trash that comes down the river and it stops up the ducts where it goes down underneath the bridge."

Parts of the greenway were closed Monday due to the flooding.
