ROANOKE (WSLS10) - With southwest Virginia under a wind advisory, downed trees and power lines can be an issue.

That's why experts say you should have your trees inspected to prevent future damage to you home, car and property.

Certified arborist Joel Koci says it's important to have an inspection twice a year. He also recommends inspections after severe weather conditions like what Southwest Virginia has seen the past week.

"Because of the storm activity, the tree may have suffered some structural or architectural damage that can lead to future breakage," Koci said.

He says there are signs to look out for such as a trunk with any cracks or holes, or indication that the tree is tipping.

Often soft, saturated ground can lead to downed trees after roots can no longer stay rooted in the soil.

Koci also says if tree limbs extend over your home, they need to be trimmed.
