ROANOKE COUNTY (WSLS 10) - Folks in the Roanoke Valley are cleaning up the mess Mother Nature left behind. Those who have businesses and live along the Roanoke River continue to watch the water levels.

They said the rain over the past two weeks forced them to take precautions.

According to the National Weather Service, the water level at the Roanoke River was 5.6 feet Sunday morning after all the rain fell. Flood stage is 10 feet.

The NWS said the water level is going down, meanwhile people made sure the water didn't get inside their homes or businesses.

Some who live along the river have removed the fallen trees and debris that washed up on their yard.

"It got up for a while, it's just leaves, debris around the river and essentially gets washed down the river and gets caught around the bridge...and creates like a damn so it kind of overflows around the buildup and pushes it out further," Scott White who lives along the river said.

Business owners had to remove about eight inches of water.

"Very disheartening because it's a lot of work, we had a lot of help, but I don't know how much more we can do, there's not a lot you can do to stop the water," David Price owner of River Rock said.
