ROANOKE COUNTY (WSLS 10) - The wet weather over the past week has impacted firefighters who wanted to connect with the community.

Crews at Read Mountain Fire and Rescue in Roanoke said they were supposed to have open house Sunday, but because of the bad weather they had to postpone the event.

They were going to talk to the community about the importance of a working smoke alarm.

"Smoke detectors obviously save lives, especially in the middle of the night when there's a fire in the residence some places actually don't have working smoke detectors. We've gone on several fires where people don't have working smoke detectors so we need to educate them," said Michael Ketchan, Read Mountain Volunteer Fire and Rescue.

The open house is now scheduled for October 18.
