Teen rescued after falling 4,000 feet into cave

BLACKSBURG (WSLS 10) - A 18-year-old male is recovering after falling into a cave.

The teenager was found about 4,000 feet in the cave, said authorities.

The Blacksburg Volunteer Rescue Squad said the incident happened on Friday, October 2 at approximately 4:00 p.m.

Officials said the teenager broke his leg in a cave in Monroe County, West Virginia.

One of teen's companions returned to the entrance around 5 p.m., called 911, and called two West Virginia cavers with rescue experience.

A Blacksburg Cave Rescue Group member was notified by one of the WV cavers. Fifteen BVRS members, along with crews from surrounding areas, responded to the scene, while one additional BCRG member ran dispatch.

They said the patient was removed from the cave at 1:00 a.m., and transported to a local hospital. He was reported to be in a lot of pain, but in good spirits.
