Who should you call during an emergency? It's not always 911

ROANOKE COUNTY (WSLS 10) - Roanoke County's Emergency Communications Center says they're here to help connect you with help in an emergency.

But many times people call the 911 center to report common utility outages.

They're asking folks to please reserve 911 calls for public safety and medical emergencies, and use these numbers to report common utility outages.

Here are a few numbers to report common utility outages :

Power Outages – contact Appalachian Power at 1-800-956-4237

Water Main Breaks - contact the Western Virginia Water Authority at 540-853-5700

Gas Leaks – contact Roanoke Gas at 540-777-0623
