LYNCHBURG (WSLS 10) - The public is urged to be on alert for possible flooding and downed trees from potentially severe weather across the area.

Crews in the Lynchburg District of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) prepared their equipment and are now monitoring conditions to ensure a ready response.

Flooding and downed trees are likely as heavy rain pounds already saturated soil.

The public is encouraged to stay off roads in severe weather, if possible. If travel is necessary, motorists should never drive through flowing water on roadways. Only six to 12 inches of water can float a small vehicle; in addition, the road surface may not be intact. With higher winds power may be out to traffic signals. In that case, intersections should be approached as four-way stops.

Finally, slow down!  Drive for the conditions.
