GLASGOW (WSLS 10) - Firefighters from the Glasgow fire department were busy Friday, preparing for heavy rain.

"We make sure all our equipment is fueled, serviced, saws are sharpened because we're going to encounter some trees I'm sure," Glasgow Fire Department Chief John Hill explained.

However, with all the hours Chief Hill logs he, won't be getting a paycheck. In fact, all 20 of his firefighters are volunteers.

"We get calls through the radio system or text message and we just drop what we're doing and respond," says Hill.

Since they're all volunteers, they rely on neighboring departments like Buena Vista And Rockbridge Baths fire department for extra help. In turn, the Glasgow fire department helps them too.

For this weekend, they're preparing to respond to the more flood prone areas around the James and Maury rivers. The Rockbridge County Swift Water Rescue Team, also made up of volunteers, were getting the boats ready.

Patrick Stump with the swift water rescue team said he was also preparing his housel.

"When it's calling for bad weather I always worry about their safety and me being out a couple of hours longer I constantly worry if they're ok and they're safe," says Stump.
