Flash Flood Watch across region through weekend

WSLS Storm Team 10 – (WSLS 10) - Flash Flood Watch is in effect through 8 p.m. Saturday, while High Wind Watch is in effect through early Sunday morning. We could see 2-5" of rain, along with wind gusts over 30 mph.

Flooding is still likely in spots, as rivers and streams are swollen and the ground is saturated. The Dan River in Danville, Paces, and South Boston appears to be the spot where we could see moderate to perhaps even some major flooding.

Indications are the Roanoke River could still some minor flooding, but shouldn't be that bad. Any change in the forecast could change this though, so please stay tuned. And with gusty conditions, trees could topple and power lines could fall leading to some power outages.  But, there are some good signs:

  • Hurricane Joaquin, while a monster storm, will miss us completely
  • Strong storms across the Carolinas could "rob" us of some moisture
  • The heavy rain threat may end a little earlier than expected

Tonight: Rain likely, heavy at times.  Breezy & cool with lows in the lower 50s.

Saturday: Periods of rain, especially in the morning.  Rain will become more scattered and lighter in the afternoon.  Breezy (arguably windy) and cool with highs in the upper 50s.

Sunday still looks cloudy with passing showers possible.  The rain however does not look to all that widespread, nor very heavy.  It will stay cool with highs in the lower60s.  Some leftover showers are still possible heading into Monday, but again, we are not looking at anything significant.  It will be a mostly cloudy day (some breaks of sun are possible) with temperatures climbing into the middle 60s.

High pressure FINALLY comes back into play for us Tuesday through Thursday, as we will be partly to mostly sunny each day.  And temperatures will continue to go up, reaching the lower 70s on Tuesday and the middle 70s Wednesday through Friday.  By next Friday, we may have more clouds around and the chance for some spotty showers.
