SALEM (WSLS 10) - Several localities throughout Southwest Virginia have emergency shelters on standby on Friday, Oct. 2.

The City of Salem originally planned to open an emergency shelter at the Salem Civic Center at 5:00 p.m. But officials have now decided to put the shelter on standby.

According to Director of Communications Mike Stevens, if the shelter opens it will be set up as a Regional Shelter that'll be available for those in the Roanoke Valley and throughout the area.

Stevens said they're not expecting the Roanoke River to crest to the point of evacuations but he said they will be prepared if someone's displaced from their home.

Should the shelter open, The American Red Cross will assist residents/

Other areas that have Emergency Shelters on standby are:

  • Roanoke City: Emergency Shelter on standby for the Berglund Center at 710 Williamson Road, not active at this time
  • Danville: Emergency Shelter on standby for Bonner Middle School at 300 Apollo Ave., not active at this time
  • Martinsville: Emergency Shelter on standby at Martinsville Middle School (Shares the shelter with Henry County), not active at this time
