(WSLS 10) - The Forest Service announced Thursday they authorized additional surveys on the Jefferson National Forest for the proposed Mountain Valley Pipeline.
Three additional segments were authorized:

- A one-half long mile segment along a newly acquired tract of land on Peters Mountain in Giles County
- A 1.8 mile long segment across Sinking Creek and Brush Mountain in Montgomery County
- A 6 mile long segment along the existing Forest Road 972 (Pocahontas Road) that would provide access to the Peters Mountain route in Giles County.
Surveys for wetlands, water, soil, and suitable habitat for sensitive species, including federally listed threatened and endangered plants and animals will be conducted within the next year.

Officials say these surveys are collectively necessary to determine the feasibility of proposed routes on the Jefferson National Forest.
The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), as the lead federal agency, will conduct an in-depth environmental analysis on private and public lands.
