SALEM (WSLS 10) – Thirty-thousand pounds of food was donated to people in need in Southwest Virginia Thursday during one of the slowest times of year for food donations.

For its 7th year of "A Day of Giving," the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints based in Salt Lake City, Utah decided to donate to Feeding America Southwest Virginia.

Jenny Doud with FASWVA says the amount donated will help make more than 25,000 meals this month.

"Currently there are one in eight people in our region that is food insecure and a gift of this size with the type of food that is being donated is going to make wonderful meals for people," Doud said.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints picks a different food bank each year to receive the annual donation. This is one of the biggest one time donations Feeding America Southwest Virginia has received this year.
