Voluntary evacuations continued through the evening in Salem

SALEM (WSLS 10) - Residents in some parts of Salem were asked to evacuate due to rising waters Tuesday night.

Mike Stevens with the city said crews asked residents to monitor the weather for changes. Management at several apartments and mobile home parks, as well as private residences were asked if they needed help getting out ahead of flooding roads and building.

Voluntary evacuations were executed at some bottom-level apartments at the River Walk Tuesday evening. The evacuations were not mandatory. The Swiftwater Rescue team performed a successful rescue at a house near Mill Lane and Tidewater. Six people and a pet were successfully rescued to safety.

The Red Cross set up an emergency shelter at the Salem Civic Center for anyone who felt the need to evacuate.

Meanwhile, the Roanoke River in Salem continued to rise. The National Weather Service showed "major flooding" in Glenvar and waters rising near "moderate flooding" at the Salem Pump Station.
