Bystanders help woman whose car became trapped in rising water

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - Bystanders along Bennington Street helped rescue a woman from her vehicle, stuck in flood waters Tuesday evening.

It appeared the woman tried to drive her vehicle through rising waters and became trapped. After she got out of the car, two men helped her to the sidewalk.

A short time later, rescue crews arrived and worked to get the woman's medications out of the car. Responders said the situation could have been a lot worse.

Battalion Chief Robert Perdue said, "It could have floated away. Very serious concern for us. That's why we keep telling people don't cross the roads with water on it."

After getting her medications, first responders helped the driver wade through the flooded waters, where she was able to catch a ride. The stranded car would stay in the water until levels went back down.
