Roanoke Fire-EMS: "Nine out of ten car seats are installed incorrectly"

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - The Roanoke Fire Department said an average of 90 percent of car seats are installed incorrectly and motor vehicle accidents are the number one cause of child deaths.

The department said education is key when buckling your little ones. Fire fighters said in addition, they find children aren't sitting in their seats correctly, the seat and child are not compatible or the car seat is not installed correctly.

"Before I took the certification course, my car seats were not in right," said Tiffany Bradbury, Roanoke Fire-EMS. "You know, you just kind of say ‘I'll take the seat belt, I'll loop it through, I'll buckle it in and we're good to go'. I didn't know I had to lock my vehicle belt system or lock my lower anchors…there's a lot of things out there."

Roanoke Fire-EMS will host a child safety seat belt event Saturday morning starting at 10 at the Valley View Target.
