Former Altavista police chief indicted on felony charges

ALTAVISTA (WSLS 10) -  A Pittsylvania County man has been indicted on charges of embezzlement and forging public documents.

Former Altavista Police Chief Kenneth I. Walsh, 50, of Hurt, Va., turned himself in to state police Tuesday afternoon.

A Campbell County grand jury indicted Walsh Monday, Sept. 14 on nine counts of forging public records and one count of embezzlement by a public official. All charges are Class 4 felonies and each carry a recommended sentence of two to 10 years in prison and a maximum $100,000 fine.

According to state police, an investigation began in February 2015 into allegations of fraud committed by Walsh during his employment with the Altavista Police Department.

Walsh was released on bond.

The investigation, which remains ongoing, is being conducted in conjunction with the special prosecutor appointed to the case from the Office of the Bedford County Commonwealth's Attorney.
