ROANOKE (WSLS10) - New policies on Roanoke bus lines keeping passengers from carrying guns are sparking debate in the Star City.

After a man was charged for pulling out a gun during a fight on one of Valley Metro's buses, the company outlined a gun policy that would ban passengers from openly carrying guns on its buses.

Now the Virginia Citizens Defense League (VCDL) is challenging those rules stating the metro has no authority to restrict firearms.

The group even stated they would go to court over the changes.

Pamela Greenwood says she has never seen an issue on one of the buses.

Long-time bus riders like her we spoke with say the metro shouldn't be allowed to go against gun owners with permits.

"As long as people are legally carrying them, I don't see anything wrong with it," Greenwood said.

City attorney Dan Callaghan says he is researching the law and hopes to have an open dialogue on the issue.

He says the policy is being reviewed.
