It happened just across from Riverside Park at 2238 Rivermont Avenue.

Norfolk Southern said one of its trains hit the man, who was standing on the James River trestle shortly after 10 a.m. He fell off the bridge and onto the riverbank below and died. The 35-year-old man from Lynchburg was found at the base of the trestle. Police said he was not a college student. No foul play was suspected.

Norfolk Southern said the northbound train was unable to stop before hitting the man standing on the south side of the trestle. The train had two locomotives, seven rail cars and a caboose.
