ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - The only survivor in last week's tragic shooting near Smith Mountain Lake, killing WDBJ7's Alison Parker and Adam Ward, continues to improve.

Updates on Vicki Garnder's condition have been periodically posted on Vicki's Recovery Page on Facebook after the Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce member was shot during a live interview.

The status posted on Wednesday said, "So if you are wondering about Vicki's recovery progress today... you will be pleased to know that the "With-it-ness Fairy" must have visited her first thing this morning! We arrived to a bright eyed-bushy tailed Vicki who was ready to take on her once detested physical therapy with determination. Her daytime highlights included the ability to take a bite of real food and a visit from her most favorite guy in the world... Buddy! (Sorry Dad, but it's true.) Buddy was cleared for his first hospital visit with a bath and up to date shot records."

The post went on to say while Buddy was visiting, Vicki was amazed to see Chairman of the Chamber Troy Keaton on the news sharing her vision of the potential for a community center at Smith Mountain Lake. The idea is to provide a large center to be used by people in the region as a gathering place and resource for everything from adult/higher education classes to large town hall meetings.

'Vicki's Vision' started long before last week's devastating events, however, Vicki feels the creation of a community center could be a way to strengthen and heal our community. The family of Vicki said they would love for this incredible milestone to be a positive, lasting outcome of this terrible tragedy.

"Vicki would like to express her gratitude for the outpouring of compassion and support she has experienced through all of you. Thank you," said Vicki's Recovery Page.

Vicki and her family are overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support shown to them in the past week. They have released the following statement:

Many have expressed interest in showing their love financially.  Vicki is humbled by these expressions and has instructed her family to assure all funds go to the promotion of Smith Mountain Lake.

Per Vicki's request the family and the SML Regional Chamber of Commerce have started a fund called "Vicki's Vision."  These funds will be used to positively promote Smith Mountain Lake and continue the mission Vicki cherishes of growing business and promoting tourism at the Lake.
