A brief moment during the video revealed the shooter's face. Officers said the associate producer was able to identify the shooter as former WDBJ7 employee Vester Flanagan II, also known as Bryce Williams. Flanagan had been fired from WDBJ7 prior to the shooting.

Through his identification, Flanagan was also connected to a grey Ford Mustang with registration for his name and address, as well as a rental vehicle connected to his name and address. Officers spoke to a leasing consultant with West Wind Apartments who confirmed Flanagan was a lessee at the apartment complex.
