ROANOKE (WSLS 10 SPORTS)-It was one of the most successful seasons in SW Virginia football in recent memory. The WSLS 10 viewing area had 5 state finalists in last falls football title games, and they brought home four titles. Glenvar, Magna Vista and Altavista won VHSL crowns, while Roanoke Catholic won the VIS Division IV title. Salem High School finished as the state runner-up in the Group 4A classification.

Another recurring theme around the area has been the deluge of new coaches. James River, Blacksburg, EC Glass and Franklin County are sporting new coaches. So are Tunstall and Fort Chiswell. Some are familiar faces in new places, others are not new to the programs, but new to the positions..

At Northside High school, there is a special family affair going on in the program. Star slot receiver Tra Jackson has his father TJ on the coaching staff. TJ was a star quarterback for Northside back in the late 1980's for coach Jim Hickam. He's working with the quarterbacks and defensive backs, and his oldest son Brandon is also on staff. Its a special family situation for coach Burt Torrence's Vikings has he enters year 10 at the helm. The VHSL season opens on Friday night, August 28th.
