The Franklin County Sheriff's Office said rescue crews went to Heatherton Dr. after someone reported a child was unconscious and unresponsive. Emergency crews and law enforcement tried to resuscitate the child, but were unsuccessful. They continued to attempt to save the child for 30 minutes after the child was pronounced dead at the scene.

The child's body was sent to the Medical Examiner's office for autopsy. Results from the Medical Examiner's office showed the cause of death was a small caliber gunshot wound.

The investigation and evidence found at the scene led to charges of involuntary manslaughter and felony child abuse/neglect on the father of the child, 32-year-old Jeremiah Keith Neiderhiser. Neiderhiser was held in the Western Virginia Regional Jail on a $250,000 bond.

Neiderhiser was looking for a lawyer. A court date had not been set.
