FRANKLIN COUNTY (WSLS 10) - A major milestone was reached at a local animal shelter when doctors performed the fifty-thousandth spay-neuter operation.

The Franklin County Humane Society's Planned Pethood clinic conducted this and many other similar operations as part of its mission to create a community where all dogs and cats get a chance to live a happy and healthy life.

Marybeth Chaconas, a veterinarian at the clinic, explained why the milestone was so important.

"So the combination of efforts between our local animal control, animal shelter and us and other local veterinarians has really done wonders to save the lives of dogs in this county," Chaconas explained.

The Franklin County Humane Society offers $20 procedures as part of the Primp your Pit campaign, which continues through August. Information about the program may be found here: http://plannedpethoodrockymount.com/
