ROANOKE (WSLS 10 SPORTS)- Coach Burt Torrence enters season ten at Northside high school with a pair of state titles over the past six seasons.  The nucleus of last year's playoff contender is returning.   They put up a 10-3 record a year ago, bowing out to the eventual 3A state champ Magna Vista in a 40-28 shootout.   It's another year at Northside which means they are expected to contend.

"What makes this program special is that everyone's held to the same level of accountability, by the coaching staff and by one another. So whether you're a senior or whether you're a freshman walking in that's never played football before, you're picked up, you're lifted up, you're coached up. I really love the fact that our young men encourage the younger guys, get to know them on a first name basis, and help them become a part of what we consider to be a special program, explains Coach Torrence.
