2 people treated after bites from rabid river otter in Virginia

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) - Officials in Virginia Beach say two people are undergoing treatment after being bitten by a rabid river otter.

The Virginian-Pilot reports the otter was found in the coastal community of Sandbridge on Wednesday. The otter's body was sent to Richmond, where it tested positive for rabies.

Virginia Beach Environmental Health Manager Dan Horn says two people bitten by the otter went to an emergency room and are being treated with a series of rabies shots.

Health officials encourage residents to report attacks and bites from wild animals and make sure their pets are vaccinated.
