ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - The City of Roanoke announced Wednesday its single stream recycling program would begin in October.

The city said every household will be able to throw all recyclable items together in the same cart - no more separating and remembering every-other-week pickup schedules.

According to the city's web page about the program, "the first step to this exciting change is the delivery of the carts. Starting in mid-August, residents will receive a recycling roll cart equipped with wheels, a handle, and a lid, dramatically increasing the ease of recycling. It should take about six weeks to deliver all the carts."

The city said the carts are paid for by the recycling vendor, RDS, which has opened a facility to accommodate anticipated increase in recyclable materials. Recycling collection will be every other week on normal collection days.

The new system will also change collection of bulk and brush. Starting the week of Oct. 5, the city will provide weekly collection of trash, bulk, and brush on normal collection days in all neighborhoods.

There will be A Week and B Week schedules for pickup and a calendar will be sent with the new cart. Residences with existing alley collection for recycling will continue to use the small recycling bins.
