ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - The Roanoke Rescue Mission honors Roanoke City Police Chief Chris Perkins with its highest award.

Wednesday morning, Rescue Mission CEO Joy Sylvester Johnson presented Chief Perkins with the "Mission Angel Award".
Johnson says Chief Perkins and the entire Roanoke City Police Department are deserving because they're so far ahead of the curve nationally on community policing.
"People are seeing what we are trying to do here as a police department and that is get out and engage the community, All parts of our community. From individuals with unique challenges to people who are maybe a little down on their luck and we want to show that we care about all of them," Chief Perkins said.
The Rescue Mission has given out about one "Mission Angel Award" a year for the past 20.
