Motorcyclist dies after crashing while trying to pass in no passing zone

PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY (WSLS 10) - A Dry Fork man died when he tried to pass a vehicle in a no passing zone on Route 41 (Franklin Turnpike) Friday.

Virginia State Police said it is investigating the fatal crash that happened at 10:59 p.m. on Route 41(Franklin Turnpike), one quarter of a mile south of Route 703 (Irish Road) in Pittsylvania County.

Police said 47-year-old Tony Debaere was driving a  1999 Harley Davidson motorcycle northbound when he tried to pass another northbound vehicle in a no passing zone. The motorcycle sideswiped a southbound 1998 Toyota Tacoma pick-up pulling a trailer and then ran off the right side of the road. Debaere was wearing a helmet and died at the scene.

The 1998 Toyota Tacoma was driven by a 16-year-old man from Danville. He was not injured.

Virginia State Police Crash Reconstruction Team was called to assist. The crash remains under investigation.
