Dozens of REACH volunteers, which stands for Real Experiences Affecting Change, cleaned up old garden beds at Garden City Elementary school.

When the students come back they'll get to pick out food to plant.

Jenna Danyew, Community Garden Assoc. Intern said, "Through their volunteer service today they're pouring directly into the lives of so many kids that attend this school."

"The plan is overall to put these gardens in place in all the elementary schools here in the city, working with the school system and then ultimately work them in a curriculum, so that these are not just great places for recreation, but great places for learning as well," explained Mark Powell, Community Garden Assoc. Director.

Powell says it is the third garden built on Roanoke City school property.
