Search warrants show suspect in Lyon sisters case was "being deceptive"

SALEM (WSLS 10) - Search warrants reveal more details about the decades-old Lyon sisters case.

Katherine and Shelia Lyon, 12- and 10-years-old at the time, disappeared from a Maryland shopping mall 40 years ago. The suspect in the murder investigation, Lloyd Lee Welch Jr. Is in a Delaware prison awaiting extradition to Bedford County where he faces two counts of 1st Degree Murder with the Intent to Defile.

According to court documents obtained from Salem District Court, detectives interviewed Welch and his relatives in recent years. Court papers reveal Lloyld Welch told investigators he believed Sheila and Katherine Lyon were abducted, sexually assaulted and burned. In a separate interview, Welch informed officials he lied about information provided in the past, according to search warrants. Court documents also state investigators believed Welch was being deceptive.

According to official records, authorities seized a cell phone, computer and letters from the Salem home of Connie Akers, one of Welch's relatives. Police said Akers admitted seeing Welch arrive at a Taylor's Mountain property in 1975 with a duffle bag. In court papers, Akers described the bag as containing blood content and having a foul smell.
