ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - Weekend backups are nothing new during the summer months, with millions of people heading out on vacations - but the 4th of July is known for large traffic jams.

Fortunately, Google's traffic and navigation app Waze is revealing some of the best and worst times to be on the roads this weekend.

If you plan to leave town on Friday, you're better off hitting the road before 7 a.m. Typically, traffic will peak at about noon and reach its worst between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. when holiday traffic meets up with rush hour commuters.

On July 4th, we're expecting to see some of the biggest delays between 10 p.m. and midnight as the fireworks displays wrap up and people head home for the night.

And the journey home will be just as stressful - with rush hour likely to extend from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. Sunday night in most areas.

Major east coast cities, like Charlotte, Washington D.C., Chicago and Richmond are expected to have the biggest backups throughout the next few days.
