ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - A local tattoo artist hopes to make a difference and set a Guinness world record with his work.

Chip Thomas of Chips Custom Tattoo on Williamson road wants to set a record for the most tattoos of awareness ribbons in a 24-hour period. Sunday, he'll tattoo ribbons in six different colors and three different sizes.

Thomas said he hopes to raise awareness about autism and cancer.

"A friend of mine had stage 4 colon cancer and she lives in Illinois. I wasn't able to go back and help her so I did a similar event last year. We ended up raising about $11,000 for charity and now she's cancer free," Thomas said.

Thomas tried to set a record last year for the longest single tattoo sitting, but fell short. He said he hopes to redeem himself this year by completing 111 tattoos in 24 hours.

It starts Sunday at midnight, and tattoos are $30. Airbrush and Henna ribbons for adults and children will also be available, but will not be counted in the record total. All money will benefit Unbridled Change and the American Cancer Society.

There will also be a car show during the record attempt. For more information, call (540) 685-3251.
