Airport Assistant Manager Henry Carpenter said the single engine plane crashed just across the road from the end of the runway.

Pilot Roger Lee Kempfer returned to scene of the crash after being released from the hospital. He said he has more than 20 years of flying experience.

" Jason the guy that was with me is a pilot," he said. "He bought a plane and we were coming down to look at it."

Police said they received a call  about a plane crash around 5:07 p.m.

"They are lucky the plane didn't flip and dod not catch fire, said Trooper Mike Musser, Virginia State Police. "They could have easily skid onto the roadway but it was contained to the field."

Officials said the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
