WPTV – Sharks were spotted at Phil Foster Park in South Florida Friday… but there was no cause for alarm.

The sharks were place into the water on purpose.

Three 5-foot hammerhead shark statues were put in place along the 800 foot snorkel trail at the park.

"These sculptures today just add another dimension to this reef. So not only is it piles of rocks and bits of concrete, but now we have some sculptures down here too," PBCERM Direct Daniel Bates said.

The statues lie in about 10 feet of water and are easily accessible just off the south shore of  the park at the Blue Heron Bridge.

No tax money was used to make the artwork.

The statues were created and donated by part time Palm Beach County resident Tom McDonald.

McDonald, who is a Roanoke artist, and Practice Administrator at Physicians to Women, recently crafted the cement sharks to enhance the reef life.
