Suspect taken into custody in shooting of 18-year-old in Roanoke

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - The Roanoke City Police Department has arrested a Roanoke teen in connection to a late night shooting in the City.

Leonardo DeMarcus Reed, 19, of Roanoke, Va., was taken into custody on Tuesday and charged with malicious wounding.

According to police, Reed shot Laqwane Lee Haley, 18, of Roanoke, Va., in the chest while sitting inside a vehicle late Monday night.

Haley told police the shooting happened Monday, June 29 in the 1200 block of Melrose Avenue NW in Roanoke.

Police say the teen walked into the Emergency Room at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital at approximately 11:10 p.m. suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. They say Haley was conscious and was able to tell officers what happened. Police say the suspect and victim knew one another.

An officer went out to check that block and was not able to find anything at that location.

Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital was put on "precautionary alert" late Monday night into Tuesday morning due to the incident. They say this is standard protocol.
