RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) —  The Jefferson Davis statue on Monument Avenue in Richmond has been vandalized.

Someone spray painted the words “black lives matter” at the base of the statue.

The vandalism comes just days after an online push to have the monuments of Confederate leaders removed from Richmond’s streets.

A petition is calling on state lawmakers to have the monuments removed because some believe they are symbols of racism.

Police say maintenance crews are on scene cleaning up the spray paint.

If you know anything about the vandalism, police ask that you call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000.

This is a developing story.
