The raises are not something all board members are in favor of. On the board's first vote, three members voted in favor. Two members voted against.

Al Bedrosian, who represents Hollins, is against the raise. He said, "It's kind of a moral issue. Should people in government be voting for their own raises? I think a lot of people don't like this."

Bedrosian argues a public vote on November's referendum would be a better method than a board vote.

Charlotte Moore, who represents Cave Spring, is in favor of the raises. She feels they are needed to help attract quality board members in the coming years.

According to Roanoke County, board members have had raises eleven times in the last 15 years.

The board is expected to vote on the raises Tuesday night, following a public hearing.
